The Mathematics Instructional Leader programs for grades PreK-6 and grades 4-9 will prepare current teachers for a role as a mathematics instructional leader. The program includes mathematics content coursework as well as courses in education and leadership. Courses integrate the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), Maryland College and Career Ready Standards (MCCRS) and will focus on the Standards for Mathematical Practice and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Effective Principles of Teaching and Learning.

Program Options

The Mathematics Instructional Leader program has three distinct options depending on where you are at in your teaching career:

  • MA in Leadership in Teaching for experienced teachers who already hold a K-12 state certification
  • Post-Baccalaureate Certificate for certified teachers and non-certified individuals who hold a bachelor's degree
  • Post-Master's Certification for certified teachers who already hold a master's degree

Stackable Credentials

Credits earned in the post-baccalaureate certificate program can roll seamlessly into the MA in Leadership in Teaching: Mathematics Instructional Leader.

Student Outcomes

As a student in this program, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the mathematics content taught in grades Pre-K-6 or 4-9
  2. Plan effective mathematics lesson planning that addresses the standards
  3. Integrate the NCTM goals, principles, and standards in the classroom
  4. Incorporate the Standards for Mathematical Practice into daily lessons
  5. Plan instruction to address the needs of a variety of learners, including: special needs learners, struggling students, English Language Learners (ELL), and gifted learners
  6. Integrate technology into mathematics instruction
  7. Analyze the thinking of students and use assessment data to inform instruction
  8. Plan and implement professional learning for continual improvement
  9. Plan and implement outreach and collaboration with families and the community

Program Outcomes

At the completion of the program, you will be able to:

  1. Enhance career and professional development opportunities for employment pathways in the profession, e.g., lead teacher, mathematics coach, mathematics instructional facilitator, mathematics curriculum specialist.
